Several Ghanaian supporters who travelled thousands of miles to cheer on the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup were left stranded outside Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Saturday after a ticket distribution mix-up denied them entry to Ghana’s Group L clash against Croatia.

According to a report by The Athletic, many of the affected fans had journeyed more than 5,000 miles from Accra to support the national team but ended up watching the opening stages of the match from outside the stadium.

The confusion unfolded at one of the stadium entrances, where large groups of Ghanaian supporters had gathered expecting to receive tickets they believed had been arranged for them. However, uncertainty quickly emerged as no one appeared certain about who was responsible for distributing the tickets.

Some supporters reportedly believed a representative of a Ghana supporters’ association was due to arrive with the tickets, while others alleged that tickets originally intended for the group may have been diverted and resold through secondary ticketing platforms.

One disappointed supporter told The Athletic she suspected the tickets meant for the waiting Ghanaian fans had instead been sold on resale websites, although there was no immediate evidence to substantiate the claim.

As kick-off drew closer, many supporters remained hopeful that the issue would be resolved. Some followed the match on their mobile phones while others continued making phone calls and seeking updates on the missing tickets.

The growing crowd attracted increased police presence around the entrance.

According to The Athletic, the number of officers stationed at the gate doubled before later tripling as authorities monitored the situation and sought to maintain order amid rising frustration among some supporters.

Despite a few tense exchanges between a handful of fans and police officers, the majority of the stranded supporters remained peaceful, waiting patiently in the hope that they would eventually gain entry.

Their hopes were dashed about 30 minutes into the match when police cleared the area around the stadium entrance and directed the supporters toward nearby parking lots, effectively ending any chance of them watching the game from inside the venue.

Ghanaian supporters have been among the tournament’s most colourful and energetic fan groups, travelling across the United States and Canada in large numbers while creating a vibrant atmosphere with drumming, singing and the country’s iconic red, gold and green colours.
