Ghana’s quest for a successful campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup begins on Wednesday with a high-stakes encounter against Panama, a fixture widely viewed as crucial to the Black Stars’ hopes of progressing beyond the group stage.

With football powerhouses England and Croatia looming in Group D, Ghana can ill afford a poor start when they take to the field at Toronto Stadium. Victory would not only provide three valuable points but also significantly boost the Black Stars’ chances of reaching the Round of 32 before tougher assignments against the European heavyweights.

The importance of the opening match has been heightened by a series of setbacks that have disrupted Ghana’s preparations.

Already without injured trio Mohammed Kudus, Mohammed Salisu and Alexander Djiku, Coach Carlos Queiroz has also been forced to contend with the absence of influential midfielder Thomas Partey, who was reportedly denied entry into Canada.

Partey’s unavailability leaves Ghana without four key players who would ordinarily form the backbone of the team, increasing the challenge facing Queiroz as he seeks to revive a side struggling for form and confidence.

The Black Stars enter the tournament under a cloud of uncertainty after enduring a seven-match winless run that led to the departure of former coach Otto Addo in March. In response, the Ghana Football Association appointed veteran Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz on a short-term deal with the mandate to restore confidence and guide the team through the World Cup.

So far, Queiroz has overseen only one match, a 1-1 draw against Wales in Cardiff, which offered glimpses of improvement but left several questions unanswered ahead of the global showpiece.

The injury crisis has further complicated Ghana’s plans. Kudus’ absence deprives the team of creativity and attacking flair, while Partey’s experience and composure in midfield will be sorely missed. At the back, the injuries to Salisu and Djiku mean Ghana are likely to rely on Jonas Adjetey and Jerome Opoku in central defence, supported by Gideon Mensah and debutant Marvin Senaya in the full-back positions.

Despite the setbacks, Ghana still possesses players capable of making a difference on the biggest stage.

Goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi is expected to provide leadership and stability between the posts, while Ernest Nuamah and Abdul Fatawu Issahaku offer pace and creativity on the wings. Much of the team’s attacking responsibility, however, is expected to rest on the shoulders of Antoine Semenyo, who enters the tournament as Ghana’s most potent goal-scoring threat.

Queiroz has remained optimistic despite the challenges confronting his side.

“Our expectation is to go out, play the best football and win every single game,” the Portuguese coach said. “We carry the hopes and dreams of millions of people on our shoulders and we want to make them proud.”

Captain Jordan Ayew, preparing for his third FIFA World Cup after appearances in 2014 and 2022, echoed his coach’s confidence and urged Ghanaians to continue supporting the team.

“We have three massive games ahead of us and we want to make Ghana proud,” Ayew said. “It’s not going to be easy, but with your prayers and support, hopefully we’ll be successful.”

Panama, however, are unlikely to be pushovers.

Under Danish coach Thomas Christiansen, the Central American nation has emerged as one of CONCACAF’s most disciplined and competitive teams. The Panamanians have enjoyed a remarkable rise in recent years, reaching the CONCACAF Nations League Finals, finishing runners-up at the 2023 Gold Cup, impressing at the 2024 Copa America, and securing qualification for only their second FIFA World Cup.

Christiansen has openly described the clash against Ghana as the most important game in the group, recognizing that a positive result would significantly enhance Panama’s chances of advancing.

With both nations viewing the fixture as a potential pathway to the knockout stages, Wednesday’s encounter promises to be a tense and fiercely contested battle.

For Ghana, the equation is simple: avoid defeat and keep qualification hopes alive. Secure victory, and the Black Stars could take a major step toward extending their stay at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
