The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has directed its National Disciplinary Committee to investigate petitions filed against former Assin Central Member of Parliament and former presidential aspirant, Kennedy Agyapong, within two weeks.
The decision was announced by the party’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, who disclosed that the National Executive Committee (NEC) received a number of petitions concerning Mr. Agyapong and referred them to the disciplinary committee in accordance with the party’s constitution and established procedures.
Speaking in an interview, Nana Boakye said the National Council subsequently endorsed the referral and mandated the committee, chaired by former Roads and Highways Minister Kwasi Amoako-Atta, to complete its investigations and submit a report within a fortnight.
According to him, the committee’s findings will be presented to the National Council, which will determine the appropriate course of action, including any sanctions it deems necessary.
“The right constitutional and procedural process is being followed,” Nana Boakye stated, stressing that it would be inappropriate to speculate on the outcome of the investigation before the committee concludes its work.
He explained that the National Council, the second-highest decision-making body of the NPP, would carefully consider the disciplinary committee’s report before arriving at a final decision.
The development comes amid escalating tensions within the governing party, which were evident during a National Executive Committee meeting held on Thursday.
Supporters of the party reportedly clashed outside the meeting venue, with some demonstrators chanting “Ken Must Go” in what appeared to be a direct reference to Kennedy Agyapong.
The unrest is believed to have been triggered by recent remarks made by the former presidential aspirant, who criticised the party’s leadership over what he described as its failure to operationalise the Afari Military Hospital.
The disciplinary committee is expected to conclude its investigations and submit its report to the National Council within the next two weeks, after which the party will announce its decision on the petitions.
