Mahama Predicts Ghana’s First Female President ‘In the Near Future’

Speaking at the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women in Beijing on Monday, October 13, 2025, President Mahama highlighted Ghana’s steady progress in advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment, citing a series of historic achievements over the past few years.

He noted that the election of Ghana’s first female Vice President and the appointment of women to senior positions across government, the judiciary, the security services, and national institutions reflect deliberate policy choices aimed at fostering inclusion.

“These are not symbolic gestures; they are a deliberate affirmation that women deserve a seat at the highest levels of decision-making,” President Mahama said. “And I am confident that, in the very near future, our women will break the glass ceiling and that a woman will be president of the Republic of Ghana.”

The President commended Ghana’s efforts in achieving gender parity in school enrolment, noting that more girls are now accessing and completing education than ever before. He said this development underscores the country’s long-term commitment to building an equitable society.

“Our commitment is further demonstrated by robust institutional reforms and legal frameworks designed to protect the rights of women and girls,” he added.

President Mahama outlined several initiatives that have strengthened gender-focused institutions, including the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service, the Domestic Violence Secretariat, and the Specialised Domestic Violence Courts.

He emphasised that these interventions are critical to ensuring justice, safety, and empowerment for women, as well as sustaining progress toward full gender inclusion in governance and national development.

President Mahama reaffirmed Ghana’s dedication to creating an inclusive society where women have equal opportunities to lead and to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s transformation.
