Four people have been confirmed dead following a tragic road accident involving a Metro Mass Transit (MMT) bus on the Peki stretch of the Eastern Corridor Road in the Volta Region.

The fatal crash occurred on Sunday, June 21, when the bus, which was travelling from Accra to Dambai, reportedly veered off the road and plunged into a ditch, leaving several passengers dead and others seriously injured.

According to preliminary reports, a total of 28 people, including the driver and his mate, were on board the vehicle at the time of the accident.

Emergency responders who rushed to the scene confirmed that four passengers lost their lives in the crash. Several others sustained varying degrees of injuries and were transported to nearby health facilities for treatment.

Among the injured are two pregnant women, one believed to be six months pregnant and the other five months pregnant. Medical personnel are currently monitoring their condition as they receive treatment.

Authorities have also disclosed that two victims remain in critical condition and are receiving urgent medical attention.

Rescue operations were carried out by emergency services and security personnel, who worked to evacuate passengers from the wreckage and transport the injured to hospitals.

The cause of the accident has not yet been established. Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash, including what may have caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle before it left the roadway.

The incident adds to growing concerns over road safety on major highways across the country, particularly along routes that connect the northern and southern parts of Ghana.

Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution while investigations continue.
