Youth Unemployment in the Greater Accra Alone Has Risen to a Whopping 49.3% in Q3 — Oppong Nkrumah affirms

The alarming rate has been repeatedly cited by political leaders, policy analysts, and civil society groups as evidence of the urgent need for targeted interventions to address unemployment among Ghana’s youth.

Among those drawing attention to the issue is former Minister of Information and Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, who has referenced the Ghana Statistical Service data to question government claims regarding employment creation and economic recovery.

According to the report as affirmed by Hon. Oppong Nkrumah, the unemployment challenge extends beyond those actively seeking jobs. The GSS reports that approximately 21.5 percent of young people aged 15 to 24 fall within the category of NEET—Not in Education, Employment, or Training. Experts view the NEET indicator as a critical measure of social and economic vulnerability, as it reflects young people who are disconnected from both learning and earning opportunities.

The situation in Greater Accra, despite the region’s status as Ghana’s commercial and administrative center, highlights deeper structural challenges within the economy. They argue that rapid population growth, skills mismatches, limited private-sector expansion, and inadequate job creation continue to constrain employment prospects for young people.

While Greater Accra currently records the highest youth unemployment rate in the country, national youth unemployment levels also remain a significant concern. The trend has renewed calls for comprehensive reforms focused on entrepreneurship development, technical and vocational training, digital skills acquisition, and investments in labour-intensive sectors.
